Forum Post of the Day: Chatroom of the Scourge World of Warcraft

Sat Jan 29, 2011 8:17 am by PeteDorr

I don't know exactly what's so funny about this long chatlog between some of the more popular undead and evil NPCs of the game (maybe just how similar this crowd ends up being to us), but it is hilarious. Basically a sequel to the old boss chat, this one has "theLichKing" chatting with "Killzone'jaeden" and "An00barak" about everything from how cold it is in Icecrown …

1 Purpose [Growth01]
For single player play, one of the most important characteristics of a
monster is its growth rate. While a monster will get a small boost to
initial statistics from its parents, its HP, Attack, Defense, Agility and
Wisdom are far more dependent on how quickly it grows. This is why upgrading
from rank F monsters like Platypunk to rank A monsters like Gigantes is
important, and why converting a Gracos to a King Squid will actually reduce
its strength.
This is particularly true of monsters which rely on magic to do damage.
Relatively few monsters have good Wisdom growth rates, and often its
counterintuitive which monsters have good Wisdom growth and which do not.
For WiFi play, absolute caps on stats are more important than growth, but
growth still plays a part. Its much easier to create a monster which will
reach its stat caps if you know which monsters will grow with the least
amount of effort, and how parent growth rate affects child growth rate.
While stat gains per level are interesting, Im primarily addressing how much
each monster gains per experience point in this guide. This is of much more
practical use for both single player and Wifi alike. In single player, you
want the strongest monsters you can get given how much experience youve
gained so far, and in Wifi you want to spend as little time grinding out
experience points as you can manage.
2 Basic Principles [Growth02]
A monster starts with half the average of its parents values for Hit Points,
Mana Points, Attack, Defense, Agility, Wisdom, and unspent skill points. If
a parent A has 100 ATK and parent B has 200 ATK, the average is 150 and the
child will start with 75 ATK.
Start value = (Parent A value + Parent B value) / 4.
Spent skill points are the average, not half the average of the parents. So
if parent A has 50 skill points in Healer, and parent B has 100 points in
Healer, the child can start with 75 points in Healer.
Spent skill points = (Parent A value + Parent B value) / 2.
Growth rate is the monsters base growth rate plus half the average of the
parents growth rates. So if parent A gains about +5 HP / level, and parent
B gains about +3 HP / level, the average is +4 HP / level, and the child
gains a bonus of +2 HP / level.
Growth rate = Base Growth + (Parent A base growth + Parent B base growth) / 4
This bonus growth does not carry over to grandchildren. So when predicting a
monsters growth rate, you only have to know its type and the types of its
parents.
Since this bonus growth rate is often as much as a 50% bonus, its important
to synthesize all newly scouted monsters as soon as it is practical. Scouted
monsters grow much more slowly, and because they have only 2 skill sets they
also gain skill points much more slowly. While synthesis is possible at
level 10, you usually want to wait until level 11 to take advantage of the
additional skill points gained at level 11.
Different monsters gain levels at different rates. A Metal King Slime will
only reach level 16 after 21,550 XP, while a Mecha Mynah will reach level 24
after 21,550 XP. A Metal King Slime will have far more Wisdom at level 16
than a Mecha Mynah at 24, because it gains so much more per level. However,
the growth rate bonus is based on level, so a Metal King Slime will
contribute just as much growth bonus per level to a slow-growing monster as
to a fast-growing monster like a Mynah.
Skill points growth depends only on monster level and whether the monster has
2 or 3 skill sets, so monsters which gain levels quickly gain skill points
faster than others, regardless of rank. If youre seeking to boost a skill
to high levels, its just as easy to do so with rank F monsters as rank X
monsters.
3 Testing methodology [Growth03]
Because parents contribute to monster growth, and monsters gain levels at
different rates, the only reliable way of testing monster growth is to
synthesize two identical monsters together. Sometimes this requires the
Phoenix Scepter to prevent the resulting monster from being different from
its parents, though most of the time the result is an identical monster.
I noted the starting values for the new monster at level 1, and then gave it
21,550 experience points. 21,550 is a fairly arbitrary value, which I chose
primarily because thats what I had at the end of my first round of testing.
There was some variance in this, but I kept it within a range of 21,546-
21,596 experience, and I am fairly confident of the results. I noted the new
values, and subtracted the original values to get the
growth from the first 21,550 XP.
I then divided the results by 1.5 to get the basic growth rate for that
monster type. Because monsters have somewhat uneven growth, this isnt an
absolute prediction of a monsters growth over its entire lifetime up to
level 99. It is, however, a pretty good way to compare different monsters,
and a fairly close prediction of what you can expect in single player, where
you are unlikely to have level 30+ monsters until after youve
beaten the game.

5. Growth Per Level [Growth05]
While growth per level is much less useful than growth per experience point,
its required in order to calculate bonus growth from parents. These values
are approximate because actual monster growth varies from level to level.

6. Infant Isle [Growth06]
On Infant Isle, synthesis is not an option, and youll use whatever is
currently strongest. Skills, MP, and magic arent very important. However,
its worth noting that the Mischevious Mole is exceptionally strong, and has
the Psycho trait, which is handy for scouting additional monsters. Slimes,
though weak and easy to catch, grow reasonably quickly.
7. Xeroph Isle [Growth07]
On Xeroph, synthesis is still not an option, because you will be scouting
monsters at level 4-5 and your monsters wont be level 11 for a while.
Skills and MP are now of some importance. Catching a Healslime is probably a
good idea because of its nearly unlimited healing at this level.
Crabids are the fastest growing monster here, but the Mischevious Moles you
caught on Infant Isle are just as strong.
8. Palaish Isle [Growth08]
By the time you complete the Palaish Gardens, you may have a few monsters at
level 11, and synthesis is now a priority. Of particular interest are the
Angel Slimes, which you can catch at the top of the Western pillars at night.
These monsters are rank C, with much better growth than anything youve
likely caught at this point, and start at level 12 when scouted so they can
be synthesized immediately to form new, strong monsters.
Gryphons (Angel Slime + demons) and Dragon Slimes (Angel Slime + almost
anything) are good choices, both strong and having good MP growth. Seasaurs
(Angel Slime + dragons) are strong too, but have virtually no MP growth at
all, which can be very limiting.
Once you enter the Palaish shrine, you may want to consider making Great
Sabrecubs (Jailcat + almost anything) as replacements for your Mischevious
Moles. These arent much stronger than Moles and not as strong as Gryphons,
but they do have Psycho, and you want the 50% bonus to growth on your Psycho
monsters as soon as possible.
Once you have the Phoenix Scepter from inside the shrine, Angel Slimes are
your best choice if you want to make a monster that relies on magical
attacks. They have exceptional MP and WIS growth, and theyre significantly
tougher than Lump Wizards. Angel Slime + Lump Wizard, forced to Angel Slime
with the Scepter, will let you graft Bang & Woosh, a decent magic attack
skill, on to your Angel Slime.
9. Infern Isle [Growth 09]
The only important creature on Infern is the Dark Slime Knight, which you can
find at night near the dock to Celeste. This makes Megalodon (Dark Slime
Knight + dragon), Giant Moth (Dark Slime Knight + nature), Silvapithecus
(Dark Slime Knight + beast), Archdemon (Dark Slime Knight + demon), and Stark
Raven (Dark Slime Knight + undead). However, if you have Gryphons and Dragon
Slimes, none of these new creatures are much stronger than those.
Dont make a King Cureslime from Dark Slime Knight. King Cureslimes have
terrible growth and arent good for much except access to Cure All. This
means you dont want to synthesize your Dragon Slimes with a Dark Slime
Knight.
If you want Cure All, Walking Dead + any nature gives you Hades Condor. Like
King Cureslime, Hades Condor gives you Cure All, and the Hades Condor is
roughly as good as a Gryphon.
The Archdemon starts with Frizz & Bang II, but its a really terrible magic
attacker, so if you make Archdemons for Frizz & Bang II, it will be to
synthesize them into something with stronger Wisdom growth. If you capture a
Dessert Demon from the Xeroph shrine, Archdemon + Dessert Demon gives you
Belial, one of the earliest Double Trouble monsters.
Most of these new creatures are physical attackers with decent MP growth.
The Giant Moth is the only strong magical attacker in the group, and cant be
made directly from an Angel Slime until later. If youre starting a brand
new magical attacker, Jailcat + Dark Slime Knight will give you a Giant Moth
with Woosh & Crack.
10. Celeste Isle South [Growth 10]
Outside the Temple of the Sun, you can find Hunter Mechs at all times and
Restless Armors at night. Hunter Mechs have the anti-metal skill, which is
useful for Oomph and to snag the occasional Metal Slime which shows up on
Celeste for 1000 XP. Many of the things you can make from Hunter Mech are
decent, if not exceptionally better than Gryphons.
Restless Armors can be combined with Demon Riders from Xeroph to make Grim
Riders. Grim Riders arent particularly strong, but they start with
Assassin, a good attack skill, and they make Bone Barons if combined with
Dark Slime Knights. Bone Barons in turn arent strong, but lead to Dullahan
later in the game.
Once youve entered the ruins, you can find Wrecktors on the second floor.
Wrecktor + any nature will give you Beetleboy, the strongest monster youll
see in a long time, and it has the Psycho trait to boot. Sabrecub + Wrecktor
is a great upgrade at this point.
Wrecktor + any material makes Jum. Hunter Mechs and Mecha Mynahs are
particularly handy for this. Jum isnt a bad monster, but it leads to Mum
(Jum + any material), Boh (Jum + any beast), and Boe (Jum + any nature). If
you have Mum, Boh, Jum, and Boe, and synthesize them in pairs in any
combination (i.e. Mum + Jum, Boe + Boh), and then synthesize those monsters,
youll get Mumboh Jumboe, an exceptionally strong monster. However, this is
very time consuming, and its likely that youll finish the game before you
complete Mumboh Jumboe.
Wrecktors are decent magical attackers, tougher than Angel Slimes, though not
as resilient as Giant Moths. If you have an Angel Slime on your team, you
might consider synthesizing it with a Wrecktor and force the result to be
Wrecktor with the Phoenix Scepter.
11. Celeste North [Growth 11]
Nothing outside the Temple of the Moon is that interesting, though you can
capture Dancing Devils and synthesize them with Imps to get Dessert Demons if
you find capturing Dessert Demons in the Xeroph Shrine too hard. Dessert
Demons in turn are only really useful for making Belials with Archdemons.
Inside the Temple of the Moon are Phantom Fencers, which when combined with
Bone Barons make Dullahans. Dullahan is really an exceptional monster, just
as strong as Beetleboy physically, and a strong magical attacker. And like
Beetleboy, Dullahan has Psycho. The main issue is that making Dullahan
requires several steps, Demon Rider + Restless Armor = Grim Rider, Grim Rider
+ Dark Slime Knight = Bone Baron, Bone Baron + Phantom Fencer =
Dullahan.
Like Mumboh Jumboe, this is very time consuming, and its quite possible to
finish the game with Beetleboys before you complete your first Dullahan.
12. Fert Isle [Growth 12]
You can catch scissors beetles or Beetleboys to make Beetleboys without
having to start with a nature creature first, as with routes to Beetleboy
before this, like Wrecktor + nature.
You can make Jamirus with Gorerilla + demon. Jamirus one of the easiest
Double Trouble monsters to make, and stronger than the slightly higher ranked
Demon at Arms. Beetleboy still has more raw power, though.
Wailin Weeds combined with anything will make just about any A rank creature
you desire. While theyre somewhat difficult to scout, a group with 2
Beetleboys and a supporting monster for healing wont have much trouble.
Wailin Weeds themselves have pretty good growth across the board.
Wailin Weed + just about anything will make Tortured Soul, a very strong
magical attacker. Dont be fooled by the low Wisdom of Weeds you capture, a
Tortured Soul will have a high Wisdom very quickly. Tortured Soul + Slime
King gives you Wight King, an unbelievably strong magical attacker thats
just as tough as most physical creatures.
Wailin Weed + beast will give you Buffalogre, Buffalogre + Satyr will give
you Moosifer, Gorerilla + beast will give you Gigantes, and Gigantes +
Moosifer will give you Atlas. Atlas is the second-strongest grower in the
game, and much easier to get than Psaro. However, like the earlier comments
about Mumboh-Jumboe and Dullahan, you should be able to finish the game with
Beetleboys before you finish making an Atlas.
13. End game [Growth 13]
Nothing youll find at Infern after the transformation changes whats
available to you. With Wailin Weeds and Beetleboys from Fert, you can make
just about anything you might want.
14. Post Game / Wifi [Growth 14]
If youre settling down to beat Solitaire or assemble a WiFi team, you have
to do considerable grinding. By far your best source of experience is
whistling for Liquid Metal Slimes inside the final dungeon. If you can
manage to do 10 damage before they run away, theyre worth 10,000 XP each.
If your attack strength is below about 500, you want to either use Double
Trouble creatures with Metal Slash, or use Hatchet Man and hope for a
critical hit.
Once you have creatures with 500 attack or more, theres little finesse
involved. Double Trouble creatures will find it easier, but anything will
do.
Important creatures are Garuda (Jamirus + Hades Condor), Atlas (Moosifer +
Gigantes), and Dullahan (Bone Baron + Phantom Fencer). These are now easier
to get, since there are unlimited (+) charged Gigantes at the Matchmaker, and
unlimited () charged Demon Riders. Garuda has excellent across the board
growth and AGI in particular, Dullahan has excellent WIS growth without
shortchanging ATK like the Wight King, and Atlas is great if
you dont care about WIS or MP.
Psaro is even better than Atlas, but takes a long time to make.
If youre trying to pump up an F rank creature for restricted Wifi battles,
it makes the most sense to maximize one of these creatures, synthesize it
with the F creature, and force the result to be the F creature with the
Phoenix Scepter. Not only will they reach the maximum quickly, theyll give
the F creature a good sized growth bonus.
15. Hall of Shame [Growth15]
These monsters are particularly worth noting as having poor growth rates for
when they appear in the game. Avoid them unless youre advancing to
something else, or youre building them up for Wifi.
